About Us
Our Story
Founded in 2023 by Mel Thomson and her daughters, Lauren and Ashley. With nearly 40 years of experience in safeguarding, child protection, and lecturing on topics including neglect and trauma, Mel brings a lifetime of expertise and compassion to Halo’s mission. Together with a dedicated team of volunteers, Halo supports children and families across the Highlands by providing essentials to meet basic needs and nurture a sense of hope.
We partner closely with health professionals, educators, social services, and other support organisations to ensure that no child in need is overlooked. Through a responsive, referral-based approach, our volunteers pour kindness and compassion into every care package, filling each one with items essential to help children thrive. From clothes and shoes to toiletries, nappies, baby formula, bedding, and even larger items like prams and cots, each package is designed to meet the unique needs of children and families. We are proud to be a place of support, warmth, and connection for families facing challenges, and we work tirelessly to bring a little extra light and hope to each child’s life.
Our Mission
Our mission is to create a brighter, more stable, and sustainable future for Highland children and families facing challenges, we do this by recycling and reusing and accepting donations of both new and pre-loved items. Halo promotes an environment of dignity and inclusivity, aiming to reduce the weight of financial hardship and foster resilience in the face of adversity.
Our Impact
"I watched them arrive at school today wearing their new winter jackets, hats and gloves. Their feet were in cosy new boots, and the smiles on their faces said it all. They came into the playground full of confidence, chatting to their friends, not shivering and trying to stay warm. I watched as they joined in games at lunchtime and saw them gain new friends. Thank you so much for the kindness, thoughtfulness and regard you have shown these families."
Primary School Teacher
"Most of our families are just surviving not thriving, but the support you provided has given them hope."
Family Support Worker
"I just want to thank you so much for your support and kindness. I can't believe everything you have done for me and my babies. This will not just help my mental health but theirs too. You guys are angels and what you do is amazing."
Mother
"I cried when I opened the bags that were delivered today by the lovely Halo volunteer. I don't know what I would of done without you. I opened the bags to see the school uniforms and shoes that we requested but you also added school bags and lunch boxes, I can't thank you enough."
